If you’re a regular or diet soda addict, keep reading. Perhaps you’re the kind of person who doesn’t even realize you have a soda can in your hand until the click-fizz of the tab triggers a Pavlovian response in your salivary glands.
Admitting your habit is one thing, but in a society where soda is ubiquitous, quitting is tricky business. Good news – there is hope!
STEP ONE: Quantify – count the calories (240 per 20 oz. bottle of cola) and count the dollars and cents. Do the math to calculate your yearly caloric intake.
STEP TWO: Try distracting yourself by filling the fridge with healthy alternatives to keep you on the straight and narrow. Ron and I both gave up diet soda over thirteen years ago. For me, substituting sparking water with fresh squeezed lemon or lime worked wonders. Soon, I wasn’t even thinking about soda and in no time, I was disgusting by the thought of ingesting those chemical-laden beverages ever again. A jug of cold water with fruit is also good idea to keep in the fridge. You can also make beautiful and healthy ice cubes infused with fruit or edible flowers to keep on hand to add to your water and make the drinking experience visually beautiful as well as tasty. If you’re addicting to diet soda, don’t be fooled. Diet beverages can be just as addictive – and a lot worse for your health (read: The Best and Worst Beverage Choices).

STEP THREE: It can help to reiterate your reasons for quitting.
- Health: Make it your duty to only refer to ‘soda’ as ‘artificially flavored sugar drink’.
- Cost: Make a promise about what you’ll spend your yearly soda savings on and reward yourself.
- Pride: Grab a buddy and arrange to get off the sugar drink at the same time. Together, you can go through this infographic below to get some serious solutions for quitting the habit.

These suggestions are priceless for anyone wanting to kick their soda habit. Counting calories and keeping track of spending is a huge eye opener! Cutting back gradually and finding alternatives, such as unsweetened tea, is a wise strategy. Mixing water and soda is an excellent way to ease into better habits. The cost calculation is astounding; consider what else that money may be used on! I’m going to try employing decoys and staying away from triggers. Enforcing a temporary ban sounds difficult but worthwhile. And referring to soda as a “artificially favored super drink” changes everything! Exploring caffeine-free alternatives and quitting with a friend appear to be excellent tactics. Thank you for providing these doable steps for quitting soda!
