We all know that when something sounds too good to be true, it probably is – in the case of Essentia, it most definitely is! There is no such thing as a natural memory foam. No matter how you tell the story, memory foam requires chemicals and petroleum – period. The FTC is cracking down on such false claims and it’s about time too. See the following link to learn more about Essentia and other companies that make false green claims. http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2013/07/mattress.shtm

Hi, Jason here from Essentia. You’ll want to read this http://www.myessentia.com/blog/ftc-lets-just-talk-it-over/
Ron & Lisa says
Hi Angela,
We appreciate your concerns and thank you Jason for clarifying this with us and our readers. We have spent time reviewing all of the official documentation and feel confident in recommending the Essentia line of bedding to our readers. The independent lab tests reveal the air concentrations meet the Greenguard Acceptable Indoor Air Quality criteria.
Essential has been quite transparent in revealing the results of their lab report HERE>
Additionally:
– Essentia natural memory foam has the same VOC levels as natural latex foams (since VOC’s are found in all latex foam products). Wouldn’t this be the same for the latex containing mattresses from Suite Sleep?
Lastly, the results from the FTC concluded with Essentia removing zero”, “no” or “free” when relating to VOCs and chemicals as it is virtually impossible to have zero or no chemicals or VOCs in any type of foam.
Hence, they have changed the wording to “low” or “very low” than “free of” as the FTC requested.
P.S. This is actually true of zero VOC paints as well – there is a set level of ‘allowable’ VOC’s (it isn’t actually zero; rather it pertains to paint with < 5 g/L of VOC).
We hope this helps! Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions.

Hey Ron and Lisa,
My boyfriend and I are moving into a new house and looking for an eco-friendly mattress. While we would LOVE an Essentia, unfortunately, there are no stores near us and he is uncomfortable buying a mattress we cannot first try out on our own. Do you have any other recommendations of good mattresses that are more readily available to try out to hold us over a few years until we can visit a shop and get an Essentia? Thanks so much in advance!
Best,
Rachel

We are in Atlanta right now but moving to Austin, Texas in May. Thanks for the link! Not sure how I missed that list, as I looked at that post but guess I didn’t scroll past the “mattresses” paragraph… whoops! Thanks again, I really appreciate the help! 🙂 You guys are doing wonderful work!

Thank you – definitely appreciate your kind words 🙂 Best of luck in one of the ‘greenest’ cities! We love Austin and just had our first vacation there last Fall visiting family who reside there. Plus, it’s the ‘home’ of Whole Foods (what’s not to love about that)? Keep us posted on your mattress search!

Thanks Ron and Lisa for this nice blog. I also believe on natural mattresses for a healthy sleep. Generally, we spend a vital time in bed after a busy day, which has a great impact on both our body and mind. I used to buy natural mattresses from bedandwood and I am satisfy with the quality.
