PAIN IN THE A’S: Asthma, ADHD, Allergies & Autism

If you are a parent, then chances are likely that one or more of your children has experienced one of these ailments: asthma, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), allergies, autism spectrum disorder, developmental or learning disabilities, obesity or diabetes. Today, one in 88 children in the U.S. suffers from autism, costing parents six times the amount of money annually to raise a child:

$10,709: Average annual cost for a child with autism

$1,812: Average annual cost for a child without autism

$3.5 million – $5 million: Estimated lifetime cost of caring for one child with autism

$90 billion: Estimated annual national cost of autism care

Between 1997 and 2008 autism rates have increased in children ages 13-17 by 289.5%.  This, and many of the above listed conditions, has strong links to environmental factors.  This means we have more control than we realize to take action to prevent and/or minimize the symptoms by being proactive and by making healthy choices at home, school and work. Rates of autism today are inexcusable, but surprising less common than other conditions (see below).  Don’t you agree it’s time we reduce these statistics? We owe it to our future generations.
