I was over the ‘south bay’ moon when I moved into my newly remodeled California beach cottage over 9 years ago. It had new, plush carpeting, white thermafoil kitchen cabinets, a fresh new coat of paint, and an adorable little gas fireplace. Ahhhhhhh, that “new‑home smell” was proof positive that everything was fresh and clean! But pretty soon I was having trouble getting out of bed in the morning. I’ve always been a high-energy person, but suddenly I was tired all the time. I began experiencing flu-like symptoms and my hormones were going haywire. I went to doctors, naturopaths, endocrinologists, chiropractors, and acupuncturists. None of them could tell me what was wrong. That’s when I began researching. Could my “clean, fresh, new abode” be the cause of my troubles? I discovered how toxins in our homes, food, and personal care products can bioaccumulate and wreak havoc on our bodies by creating a multitude of illnesses and diseases. I made changes to my home. My health returned… and I found a new calling.
This is my personal story and the catalyst that lead to my life’s work and mission of creating healthy homes. After all, our homes should be an oasis. It should be the safe place you return to at the end of a long workday to relax and recharge your body and mind. But what if that cozy oasis is contaminated by indoor air and water pollution and chemical poisons? This problem is so common that it even has a name, Sick Building Syndrome—but it’s not the building that gets sick. It’s you.
To underscore the importance of creating a healthier home, one needs to understand what constitutes a sick home, its potential impact on your health and well being, and how to identify it. Today, there exists a plethora of documented research that links the toxins in ordinary household products to negative health trends such as the rise in cancer, asthma, and many other diseases. My goal is to help you identify the toxins and their sources that can cause health problems, and pinpoint key strategies to reduce or eliminate those toxins with cost-effective solutions and its step-by-step approach will empower just about anyone who wants to take back their health by creating a non-toxic home environment.
