If you sleeping on and are aware of the toxic chemicals that conventional mattresses contain, it’s time to get a nontoxic mattress. Below we’ll cover some of the best nontoxic mattresses.
Mattress manufacturers have a history of using a cocktail of chemicals in their products that are hazardous to human health. Health effects associated with these chemicals range from eye, nose, and throat irritation to headaches and organ damage. But in response to the increasing demand for more natural alternatives, a growing number of manufacturers are now offering nontoxic options.
Unlike traditional mattresses, nontoxic/ organic mattresses are produced from natural materials like wool and natural (not synthetic) latex, and they are free of any potentially toxic polyurethane foams, chemical fire retardants, or off-gassing materials. In addition to helping you sleep better at night, a non-toxic mattress can also help reduce allergies and prevent exposure to mold and dangerous chemicals.
With various materials to choose from, finding the best nontoxic mattress that suits your needs can be a bit challenging. No worries, here’s list in no particular order of the seven best nontoxic mattresses of 2022 based on feedback from those who have used and loved them.

I’ve been eying some of the avocado mattresses for a while now. One of their ads popped on my insta feed and I was hooked, I knew I had to get one the second our current mattress would start to give in. They’re budget-friendly, environment-friendly and from what I get from their reviews, so very comfortable.
Ron & Lisa says
Thanks for your feedback, Kelly. Honestly, all of these are fabulous mattresses and brands and it really comes down to the details and what you’re looking for. There’s a lot more to each than this article could cover, so researching the certifications of each, reviews, etc. is always a great idea. We’re just soo thrilled to see many manufacturers now offering healthy, organic, and nontoxic solutions at affordable prices. Conventional mattresses are loaded with toxic chemicals that we must abandon. We can all vote with our dollar 🙂
Julia says
Great list, thanks for the resources! I never knew classic mattresses could be so damaging for our health. I would suggest keeping an eye out for white-labeling, unfortunately this is a way too common practice and you might end up spending a lot on a mattress that’s just as bad for you as a ‘regular’ one.
Penelope says
Same here, Kelly! They must have a ginormous marketing budget, it’s like their ads are constantly following me. I will cave in soon, we also need to replace our current mattress and they seem to be the best option for us.
Annie says
We’re in the co-sleeping phase and lately I keep finding myself browsing for a mattress to replace our current one. It’s not lumpy or uncomfy but it’s a pain to clean it, it doesn’t have removable covers and with a baby this is pure hell!
Ron & Lisa says
Yeeees, conventional mattresses are sadly loaded with a host of toxic chemicals that off gas into the air we breathe at the time when we are most vulnerable. You make a great point, Julia. Did you mean ‘greenwashing?’ If so, yes. This can happen with all products and industries. Here’s to healthy snoozing 🙂
Ron & Lisa says
LOL, Penelope! Yes, I’m seeing the ads, too. Marketing is so sophisticated now. An organic mattress is certainly an investment, but one well worth it. As they say, pay for prevention now – or pay more for sickness later. Sickness is costly and making healthy choices definitely makes a difference. Every bit helps.
Ron & Lisa says
Let us know how you enjoy it, Kelly!
Lucia says
I am so happy the outdated mattress industry is bombarded with 2.0 mattresses, mattresses that aren’t a chunk of plastic products. We got an organic latex hybrid mattress from Awara as a wedding gift from my sister-in-law. I honestly have no words for it, the best mattress I’ve ever slept one and this includes hotel ones.
Cath says
Wow, and I thought this would be an easy job since I haven’t heard that much about organic mattresses. I sure have my work cut out for me, thanks for the roundup, Ron and Lisa, going through each of these later on. Let’s hope I can find one that fits my budget as well.
Payton says
Small tip though: if you don’t have the opportunity to test the mattress yourself since most of these companies rely on selling their product exclusively online I would look for a company that has a free trial period, 180 days would be ideal.
Erica says
After countless years of buying mattresses on sale I finally discovered just how much this was affecting my sleep not only because they were poorly made but due to all the nasty stuff that was encased inside. Time to splurge on a mattress that won’t smell like petrol the first couple of days.
Jackie says
I’m looking for a mattress for my parents and I would rather spend some extra hundreds on a mattress that I know is good for their health and for their backs. If you can, it’s better to invest in a mattress that would last you years, economy 101.
