Our homes are making us sick. Don’t take my word for it; the Consumer Product Safety Commission connects 150 commonly used household chemicals to conditions like allergies, birth defects, cancer and psychological disorders. Materials used to build and furnish homes today release the toxic chemicals they contain into the air. What’s more, man-made chemicals called xenoestrogens, which mimic estrogen in the human body and contribute to hormone imbalance, are found in common consumer products like plastics, detergents, birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy, and antibiotics in animal feed. Add cleaning supplies and personal care products into the mix, and it’s enough to make anyone ill.
Too many people are betting their health on the belief that if a product is commonly available – if it’s sold at the supermarket or furniture store or their doctor prescribes it – it must be safe. Yet of the nearly 100,000 chemicals that have been put on the market for consumer use since WWII, only about 200 have ever been fully tested for their effects on human health or the environment! These untested chemicals are in the products we bring into our homes and are released into the air we’re breathing. Many contain carcinogens (‘a substance directly involved in causing cancer’) found in everyday products such as clothing, furniture, cleaning products, drinking water and toys. Add to that the trends in building evermore tightly sealed fortresses that make our homes more energy efficient, but also lock in all that polluted air, and you can see the makings of a health disaster.
In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency counts indoor air quality as one of the top five environmental health risks in the U.S. today. That’s because the air inside the average home is two to five times worse, and sometimes as much as one hundred times worse, than the air just outside the window. It’s easy to see why conditions like asthma and allergies and diseases like cancer are on the rise.
It’s Time for a Home Detox
Air pollution outside the home gets a lot of media attention and we even have a special index to alert us when it’s particularly bad for our health. Yet indoor air pollution is hardly ever mentioned. As a result, countless sick people continue to go to doctor after doctor, taking medication after medication, but remain unaware that they might improve their health by making simple changes at home. Instead, too many of these people are just accepting their illness as something they can’t do anything about. Alas, a first aid kit for your home: The Home Detox Green Toolbox, was designed to take aim at that acceptance and give people the tools to take back their health and their homes by drastically reducing or eliminating the toxins around them. It provides a cost effective solution for a homeowner or renter to professionally test the indoor air for mold + dust, the water and for the presence of lead. The health toolbox includes:
