The holidays are officially upon us and while Santa checks his list twice to see if you’ve been naughty or nice, have you considered asking St. Nick for the gift of health this year? Whether you’re seeking to improve the indoor air quality of your home, office or car – OR – you wish to help out someone in need this year, there’s nothing better than giving a gift that keeps on giving…the gift of clean air.
We’ve said it a gazillion times, and we’ll say it again, the air inside your home is, on average, two to five times MORE POLLUTED than the outdoor air, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). With poor indoor air quality today being linked to everything from depression, dementia, Parkinson’s, obesity and Alzheimer’s disease to heart disease, allergies, asthma, and numerous other respiratory illness, it’s time to prioritize your health and clean up your (indoor air) act! We can’t control the outdoor air (sorry Santa!), but we can make sure you, your loved ones and the big, jolly man with a long white beard are safe and sound when noshing on cookies and eggnog this year and beyond by controlling household air pollution. Household air pollution can stem from indoor cooking, cleaning chemicals, and even poor ventilation while using heating or air conditioning.
Did You Know? According to the Lancet Commission, air pollution is one of the world’s most dangerous killers. Nearly 7 million premature deaths per year are linked to air pollution. ~ The Lancet Commission on pollution and health.
Poor Air Quality and Heart Disease Connection
Most people think of lung disease or respiratory issues only when considering the effects of poor air quality. However, air quality also plays a role in the development of heart disease. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), “long-term exposure (measured in years) to air pollution increases the risk of death from cardiovascular causes. Reductions in exposure lower the risk. Short-term exposure (measured in 24-hour periods) increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, arrhythmia, and heart failure. This is especially true for groups such as the elderly.
Ambient fine-particulate pollution or PM2.5 particles come from many sources, including vehicle exhaust and factory emissions. They can get into your bloodstream and cause heart and lung conditions.
Researchers in Europe recently reported that a 5 microgram increase in annual PM2.5 levels is linked with a 13% increase in heart attacks and angina. PM2.5 includes particles smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter. Another study published by the University of Michigan School of Public Health linked long-term PM2.5 exposure with the development of indicators of atherosclerosis.
Other research has focused specifically on tiny ultrafine particles (smaller than 0.1 microns in diameter). These tiniest particles represent, in sheer number, 90% of all particles in the air.
Unfortunately, ordinary HEPA air purifiers are only tested at 0.3 microns or larger. IQAir’s HyperHEPA® filtration, on the other hand, is tested and certified to filter ultrafine particles all the way down to 0.003 microns in diameter, the smallest particles that exist. IQAir’s line of HyperHEPA filters remove 99.5% of particles down to 0.003 microns, which are 10,000% smaller than the Department of Energy’s required 0.3-micron particle size.

The Industrial Development and Pollution Link
Two types of pollutants have become rampant in industrialized cities, including:
1. Ambient air pollution from vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions and electricity production.
Ambient air pollution, especially PM2.5 and ground-level ozone, has been linked to:
• Asthma
• Diabetes
• Birth defects
• ADHD
• Autism
• Dementia
• Heart disease
• COPD
• Cancer
2. Chemical pollution from agricultural pesticides and herbicides (also called “weed killers”).
Increasing concentrations of chemical pollution have been linked to:
• Neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism and dementia
• Endocrine disruption, which stunts growth and can cause cancer
Some cities in industrialized countries bear the worst of this pollution.

Home Tips to Improve Air Quality and Save Lives
Even small, gradual changes in your daily life can save millions of lives as you take part in the global movement to clean our air.
- Avoid burning solid fuels. Try alternatives to biomass fuels. For example, use a pellet stove or coconut shell charcoal, which releases fewer toxic pollutants.19
- Use an exhaust hood when cooking. A stove hood that covers the entire cooking surface can limit indoor air pollution from smoke and gases.
- Use green cleaning chemicals. Avoid cleaners that contain toxic chemicals like formaldehyde.
- Protect yourself with a high-performance air purifier.
- The IQAir HealthOP Plus filters 99.97% of even the smallest ultrafine particles, such as those from vehicles and nearby factory exhaust, from your indoor air.
- The Atem® personal air purifier by IQAir filters 99.5% of particles down to 0.003 microns from your personal breathing zone. With the Atem, you can breathe virtually pure air even when you’re surrounded by polluted air.
- Monitor your local air quality. Use an AirVisual Pro by IQAir to keep track of your local air quality. AirVisual displays 72-hour historical and forecast data so that you can know when and why your air quality changes. Air quality data can help keep local polluters accountable by showing details of pollution’s effects on local air quality.
