Do you remember the Oprah episode where Jerry Seinfeld’s wife, Jessica, appeared in what just might be the most vibrant and cutest kitchen set ever created? Her bubbly personality was as contagious as her cookbook, Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food. Jessica shared her whimsical approach to getting kids to eat healthy by stealthily sneaking vegetables into foods they love without them tasting or realizing it. Pure genius (even if may have been inspired by Missy Chase Lapine’s previously written, The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids’ Favorite Meals).
Concerned best-selling author moms aside, not enjoying vegetables isn’t limited to just kids. Many adults still have an aversion to leafy greens, okra and Brussels Sprouts (gasp!). As vegans, Ron and I so don’t have this problem and haven’t met a vegetable we didn’t like. But many people grew up on a traditional meat and potatoes diet. Those were certainly staples at my childhood dinner table, with the occasional dashing of broccoli and green beans. However, when you know better, you do better and this case, eat better. Today, the cornucopia of veggie options is astounding and, is it just me, or are we literally discovering veggies we never knew existed?
While many of us relish in going out on a menu-limb by trying new dishes when dining out, some people are reluctant to gamble with their taste buds. And, the majority of us have no idea where to find dried cholla buds, burdock root, sea vegetables or low-oxalate greens – let alone know how to cook and serve them. I’d like to say we own a thriving metropolis of a vegetable garden but, ha! We reside in Southern California where backyards are a luxury – especially if you live near the coast. Therefore, we’ve swapped soil for scenery and rely on creative chefs when dining out to support our out-of-the-box veggie experiments, which is limited.

Meet Dr. Cowan
There is someone quite special, however, who found a way to bring the power of plants straight into our dishes – without us requiring a green thumb or effort to leave the house for that matter. Meet Dr. Cowan, a holistic physician who has studied nutrition for 40 years while working with patients.
Like Hippocrates who said, ‘Let food be thy medicine, and medicine thy food,’ Dr. Cowan specializes in helping people heal through diet and natural medicines. His book How (and Why) to Eat More Vegetables describes why eating small amounts of a wide variety of vegetables is key to optimal health. We couldn’t agree more.
Taking our lead from healthy traditional peoples, we should strive to eat at least 10 to 12 different plants a day: some roots (carrots, beets), some stems (celery, Brussels sprouts), some leaves (kale, chard), and some fruits and flowers (tomatoes, zucchini). Eating different plant parts and colors is the surest way to avail ourselves of all the nutrients plants have to offer.
The problem is, even for someone with a large garden, it’s challenging, if not practically impossible, to eat even five plants a day. Dr. Cowan’s Garden powders were created to address this problem. ~Dr. Thomas Cowan
Dr. Cowan is one of the founding board members of the Weston A. Price Foundation, and he is trained and experienced in Anthroposophic medicine. He is also a passionate and knowledgeable grower of vegetables. Through his passion for growing vegetables, he created Dr. Cowan’s garden.

Dr. Cowan’s Garden’s Plant Power
Dr. Cowan’s Garden is a line of nutritionally powerful vegetable powders: perennial greens, kale, Swiss chard, leek, squash, blends, and salts. The powders’ nutritional power derives from how they’re grown, processed and stored. Dr. Cowan’s Garden is a family-run business; his wife and two sons have significant roles within the company.
To improve human, ecological and economic health by increasing the cultivation and consumption of plant diversity. ~Dr. Cowan’s Garden Mission
How to Use the Nutritional Plant Powders
There’s no need to spend time gardening, running to the grocery store, rinsing, chopping and storing veggies. Now, thanks to Dr. Cowan’s powders, you can get all of the health benefits by being your own sneaky chef for yourself and your loved ones. The nutritional powders can easily be added to soups and stews; sprinkled on eggs, roasted vegetables, salads, baked potatoes, popcorn; blended in smoothies; folded into rice, pasta, baked goods or casseroles — really, added to anything you like to eat. Move over Missy and Jessica because these powders are ideal for parents of picky vegetable eaters, people who travel or don’t have much time to cook, and creative cooks who want to experiment with different flavor profiles.
Did You Know? Dr. Cowan’s Garden uses better than organic (biodynamically grown) vegetables. Freshly picked, gently dehydrated and straight into Miron violet-glass jars, make Dr. Cowan’s vegetable powders a leader in providing the very best nutrition for you and your family.

Organic Food, High Vitamin & Mineral Content
The vegetables in Dr. Cowan’s Garden powders are grown on biodynamic farms, which if you aren’t aware, have an even higher standard than organic farming. These vegetables are harvested at peak flavor and quality and dehydrated on low heat, around 120 degrees. Low-heat dehydration retains most of the vitamin and mineral content of the vegetables. The greens are steamed before drying to release anti-nutrients, and the beets, pumpkins and winter squash are cooked to maximize flavor and digestibility. Once dried, the vegetables are ground into powders and transferred to Miron violet-glass jars as soon as possible.
Most of the vegetables we use are “beyond” organic: They’re biodynamically grown or sourced from other certified organic farms. The Napa garden, where we grow ashitaba, perennial greens and summer savory, is small, and at this point, there is no practical way for us to get certified, but the vegetables there are grown in hand-dug and hand-weeded beds. The vegetables are picked at optimal ripeness, usually very early in the morning, when they are most potent. We use non-GMO seeds and, often, heirloom seeds.” ~Dr. Cowan
Unlike taking vitamins and supplements which typically contain additives like maltodextrin, soy flour, calcium stearate and other stabilizers, Dr. Cowan’s powers maintain virtually of nutritional value with additives or pesticide chemicals. According to the USDA, most of the nutrients (like B vitamins) are at around 90 percent levels in dehydrated vegetables. The only exceptions are vitamin C, which is at 60 percent, folic acid at 65 percent and thiamine at 85 percent.

Naked Nutrition
There is NOTHING else in the Dr. Cowan’s Garden vegetable powder jars but vegetables (the only exception is the salts, in which they grind the vegetable powders with fine Celtic sea salt). Nothing else! Choose powder blends from sweet and savory to spicy. Dr. Cowan recommends uses all of them for maximum nutrition. From leek, three beet, garden root medley and burdock root to and kale swiss chard, turmeric, carrot and more, Dr. Cowan’s powders have you – and your soups, salads, and smoothies covered. Once you buy your first jar, you can conveniently order just the refill packs on a future order and they offer free shipping with any order over $125.00. Plus, if you sign up for reoccurring delivery, you can save 15 percent on your first order (and 10 percent thereafter).
Did You Know? Research has identified three main medical uses for the common beet. The first is as a liver/gall bladder tonic because of its abundance of betaine, a phytochemical that thins the bile, thereby allowing for better bile flow. Beets have also been traditionally used to treat anemia, especially in children, because of their iron content. And, finally, recent studies have shown that beet powder is as effective a blood-pressure medicine as conventional treatments, most likely because of the presence of nitric-oxide precursors found in the beet root.
