Sniffling? Sneezing? Watery eyes? Runny nose? Headaches? Scratchy throat? No one wants to experience the unwanted symptoms of allergies triggered by increases in grasses, pollen, weeds and mold which can peak during fall months. As your body tries to ward off these allergies, it releases releasing histamines that trigger hay fever, or allergic rhinitis. If you’re among the over 50 million Americans who suffer from allergies each year as reported by the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, there are things you can do at home to help.
Keep Allergens Outside & Filter them Inside
Since allergens can attach to your hair, clothes, and skin, it’s very easy to track these indoors into your home where you spend the majority of your time. In a recent report titled, Homes for Health, released by Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the typical person spends 65 percent of their lives in their homes (and 90 percent indoors)—and ⅓ of their life in their bedroom. According to the report, which includes 36 science-backed tips to ensure each room in your home is the healthiest it can be, the consensus of the eight authors is:
Your home is your health. It’s that simple.
According to Homes for Health, ‘It turns out that heart health (and brain health and hormone health and mental health) is dependent on home health.’ The authors further offer five expert tips for your whole house and one of these is to bring in the fresh air. The report suggests, ‘The concentrations of air pollutants are often 2-5 times higher indoors than outside. Ventilate your home as much as possible, especially when the outdoor air is clean. Higher ventilation rates (in other words, more fresh air) have been linked to many benefits, including reductions in so-called ‘sick building’ symptoms, like headaches and eye irritation, and help us dilute any contaminants we generate indoors. When you can, bring more fresh outdoor air into your home by opening windows and skylights or increasing the outdoor air intake through your central mechanical system. In homes with mechanical ventilation, make sure to install high-efficiency air filters and replace them every 3-6 months.’

Did You Know? A third of all the air you breathe in your life will be the air in one room…your bedroom?
When it comes to the bedroom, Homes for Health, suggest that you treat the air (and yourself) suggesting that, ‘We breathe about 11,000 liters of air every day; a third of all that air you breathe will be in your bedroom.’ The authors suggest adding portable humidifiers and air purifiers (or whole-house air purifiers) to capture airborne dust, in particular. They advise these tips especially if you reside near a busy road or in an urban or suburban area with poor outdoor air pollution. In addition, the authors say we ‘can increase oxygen saturation in the blood and reduce the risk of having a cardiac ailment,’ just by cleaning up our home’s air quality. Common sense tells us that we can’t keep our windows open during colder, winter season. However, the authors suggest, ‘In cold, dry seasons consider using a portable humidifier – a higher moisture level is good for your skin, respiratory system, and it helps to decrease airborne influenza survival times.’
IQAir: A Revolution in Air Purification
The IQAir Atem 5-in-1 personal air purifier is quality constructed with Swiss design and German engineering. Unlike many HEPA purifiers on the market that only filter 0.3-micron particles and larger, IQAir’s Atem patented HyperHEPA filter is effective against 99.5% of particles such as course (pollen and mold), fine (allergens, bacteria, and dust) and ultrafine particles 100x smaller than ordinary air filters (ultrafine particles (UFPs) are smaller than 0.1 microns). Ultrafine particles, or UFP’s, are the most prevalent and most dangerous particles consisting of over 90 percent of all airborne particles. These UFP’s include pollutants such as viruses, tobacco smoke, and soot. Ultrafine particles are inhaled and absorbed directly into the lungs where they penetrate tissues and can be incorporated into the bloodstream due to their small size. Once in the blood, these ultrafine particles can reach any organ or part of the body.
In addition, the IQAir Atem adsorbs odor and gas molecules. The superior gas filtration results in air that is free of smells, gases, chemicals, and particles.
Create Your Personal Clean Air Zone
The researches for Homes for Health share some great tips like taking your shoes off when entering your home to reduce tracking in irritants as well as some startling statistics including this eww dust fact:
Did you know? The typical person ingests about 50 micrograms of dust per day (for kids, it’s up to 200 micrograms per day). ~Homes for Health, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health

Any product would be beneficial, especially during the winter with various heating systems. Wood burning units and natural gas draw alot of dust in the winter time (and don’t forget the ceiling fans to distribute the heat that also puts dust everywhere). These products are also of benefit to those who have an oxygen concentrator in the house where clean air is needed for the patient.
