If you are one of over 200 million Americans bathing in chlorinated water each day, then listen up. Don’t assume this doesn’t include you, because today, over 98 percent of U.S.municipal water systems treat water with chlorine-based disinfectants. With all of the bottled water hype and diligence to assure our drinking water is filtered and safe, there is little attention being placed on our bathing water. Hence, most people are only addressing half of the problem. The concern with bathing in chlorine treated water is that – although effective at killing biological agents such as germs, bacteria and viruses – chlorine reacts with organic matter in raw water to form disinfection by-products (DBP’s). These DBP’s include haloacetic acids (HAA’s) and trihalomethanes (THMs) – the most common being chloroform, a carcinogen. All of this in addition to chlorine’s link to breast, kidney and bladder cancer.
Additionally, if you bathe or Shower in unfiltered tap water, then you are absorbing chlorine directly into your body. After all, our skin is our largest organ and for most people, 50% of their daily exposure to chlorine is coming from bathing water. Why? Because, chlorine isn’t just absorbed dermally. In a hot, steamy shower, chlorine vaporizes and is inhaled directly into the lungs; which can also be an asthmatic trigger.

Thank you for this info about chlorine in the shower. What about chlorine in swimming pools? I do water aerobics 5 times a week at my local YMCA pool.
Great question Janet – and definitely a concern. Many pools owners nowadays are switching to salt water systems. Converters can even be purchased for reasonable rates for residential pools. In regards to commercial pools, and in particular, the YMCA, you may want to read this great article about YMCA’s in the mid south that have converted (4) of (8) pools to salt water or saline.
