Sip Your Way to Greener Choices
Yes, you can (and should) drink (lots of) water. Most of us strive to drink enough water throughout the day to reap the benefits of staying hydrated; spending a collective 11.8 billion (with a ‘B’) dollars on bottled water in the U.S. each year alone.
Hopefully, you’re filtering your own water and using a BPA/BPS-free reusable bottle to reduce recycling efforts and landfill waste, while consuming better water quality. While stainless steel and glass are great material choices, they’re not always practical and surprisingly don’t always have the lowest carbon footprint. Have you ever considered how the reusable water bottle you choose impacts beyond simply choosing to reduce and reuse?
What’s a toxic-avoiding, water-craving, on-the-go guy or gal to do? Introducing the healthiest reusable bottle with the smallest footprint…Nalgene! Don’t let their pretty exterior fool you – they green it like they mean it. Their bottles are manufactured right here in the good ‘old USA, made from lab-grade materials that are BPA- and BPS- free and all colors are FDA safe.
Nalgene = USA Made
Did you know that Nalgene is one of the only reusable bottle companies to proudly source and manufacturer its bottles in the USA and has been doing so for nearly 50 years!
Nalgene bottles have a 90 percent smaller carbon footprint than those made overseas[1]. Nalgene commissioned the Rochester Institute of Technology and professor James J. Winebrake, PhD to use the web-based version of the Geospatial Intermodal Freight Transportation (GIFT) model to calculate emissions due to transfer of freight for Nalgene bottles and a Competitor. The results? Startling!
- To make a Nalgene reusable water bottle, the raw material travels by rail and bus from Kingsport, TN to Fairport, NY clocking a total of 761.4 miles via rail in just under 23 hours (22 hours, 45 minutes and 17 seconds).
- To make the Competitor water bottle, the raw material travels by rail and then cargo ship from Kingsport, TN to a large container port in Southern China (note: the model does not incorporate any transport into mainland China where the Competitor’s manufacturing facility is located) clocking a total of 9,606.6 miles in just over 18 days. (433 hours, 54 minutes and 24 seconds).
- Nalgene’s carbon footprint associated with transporting raw material to production from Kingsport, TN to production facility is about 90% less than its Competitor’s carbon footprint.
How does choosing Made in USA water bottle impact your everyday?
You remember to turn off lights when you leave the room and are careful to not idle the car while waiting in a car line. Choose a Made in USA reusable water bottle to make the greatest impact and further reduce carbon footprint.
“Reaching for a reusable water bottle to save money or impact the environment is becoming more common…If you really want to reduce carbon footprint, choose a reusable bottle made in USA.” ~Eric Hansen, director of Nalgene products, Thermo Fisher Scientific (Click to Tweet)
