Living an organized life is important for your mental and physical wellbeing, but did you know that one in four Americans wish they were more organized. In our clutter-crazy society, it’s no wonder our homes, offices, and minds are more disorganized than ever!
If you decide to live an organized life, you’ll start to notice all sorts of benefits such as improved mental clarity, focus and productivity in the workplace. In your social life, you’ll notice improved relationships and a better overall image of yourself. At home, you might see that you’re less stressed and getting along with your family nicely.
If you go through your life “room by room” you can focus on one thing at a time. Our friends at Simply Self Storage put together a list of tips and tricks for organizing every aspect of your life.
1.) Organize Your Home
Studies show that your brain gets overloaded when it’s in cluttered spaces. Keep your home organized by cutting down on the little clutter that can add up. Keep every drawer organized, and utilize under-the-bed storage when possible. Set up a paper processing station for mail and other important (or unimportant) documents. Hide any visible cords that can lead to a cluttered look, and put any unsightly “collections” or unused items in storage (or throw them out)!
2.) Organize Your Work Day
HLW International conducted a study on 400 managers and employees and found that employee productivity levels were “highly influenced” by the cleanliness of the place they worked. Contribute to a healthy work environment by digitizing whenever possible, then organizing that digital world. In the physical space, keep everything in an organized place will help you keep a clear head. Additionally, you can prepare for the week ahead on Friday to ensure that you’re always ready for what comes next.
3.) Organize Your Family
Did you know that studies have shown that the cleanliness of your home can have effects on your children later on in life? The University of Michigan indicates that children who grew up in organized homes had higher educational achievements and made more money than those who grew up in cluttered spaces.
Always keep things neat by keeping things like game controllers and stuffed animals out of site. Hide toys that your children might play with in the kitchen in a “toy drawer” for easy access while you’re cooking. Plan out children’s outfits in advance to make mornings a breeze, and create a family command center so that shoes, keys, umbrellas, papers, notes and calendars are all in one place consistently.
4.) Organize Your Meals
Planning out your meals can help you lose weight and feel great. You can make meal prep super simple by seasoning three proteins in one pan, separated by foil dividers, then baking them. You can also make large amounts of food and freeze half for another time, saving on time and effort. Do the same thing with your smoothies in the morning by making them in large batches then freezing them. Also, if you portion out healthy snacks ahead of time you will be more apt to grab those on your way out the door!
5.) Organizing Your Social Life
Last but not least, having an organized social life can lead to improved relationships and more time to nurture them. If you find your schedule is too busy, schedule lunch or coffee dates in the time you have already blocked off for eating. Plan consistent phone catch-up times with those family members who don’t live near you. Clean out your social media accounts for those people, brands, or interactions that no longer serve you. Looking to spice up your love live? Make a “date night” jar full of fun activities or new restaurants–when you and your partner are board, pull an idea out!
