Clean Up Your Chemical “Body Burden” from Personal Care Products

by Guest Blogger on May 31, 2012 · 59 comments

1. LET’S GET STARTED!  Line up your personal care product bottles; ingredient labels facing you.
Ignore pretty packaging and dazzling claims like “pure,” “natural,” and “organic” on the front.  Manufactures spend millions on what to say on this front label to get you to buy.  Here is your new mantra – “It’s all about the ingredients.”

2. PUT TO THE SIDE all products with any one of these below ingredients.  It is just a start, but a good one (make your own list, as you learn, of what you are unwilling to expose yourself and your family to).

  • Fragrance – manufacturers can legally hide hundreds of toxic chemicals in this one word, including endocrine disrupting/potentially carcinogenic phthalates [THAL-ates].
Parabens – (methyl, propyl, butyl and ethyl parabens).  These can mimic hormones in the body and disrupt functions of the endocrine system.  Research reports that a high lifelong exposure to estrogen can increase breast cancer risk.
  • Propylene Glycol (PEG)/ Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) – potentially carcinogenic petroleum ingredient that can alter and reduce skin’s natural moisture factor.
  • Nanoparticles – tiny particles which have been shown to cross cell barriers, enter organs, including the human brain.  Regardless of outstanding research, common sense tells me to avoid being a guinea pig on this one; driving metals deep into our cells and organs seems like a bad idea (you may have to email the manufacturer to ask if they use nanoparticles).
  • Petroleum/Petrolatum/Mineral Oil/Liquid ParaImidazolidinyl Urea/Diazolidinyl Urea – may degrade to formaldehyde and are very toxic.
  • Formaldehyde – is a human carcinogen, and also causes a variety of ailments including skin irritation, respiratory problems, and immune system toxicities. You will not see formaldehyde on the label; it is a contaminant of the manufacturing process or formulation.  Be wary of and avoid these ingredients: Quaternium, DMDM Hydantoin, and Ureas.
  • Retinyl Palmitate – FDA report warns of enhanced skin cancer lesions in the presence of sunlight from this vitamin A ingredient.
  • Oxybenzone – chemical that is “active ingredient” in sunscreen and many products are shown to produce harmful free radicals and the ability to attack DNA cells.  Some studies have shown it to behave similarly to the hormone estrogen, suggesting that it may cause breast cancer. It has also been linked to eczema.

3. ANALYZE

What’s left of the products that you’re still willing to use? Probably not much.  Visit my Facebook page to learn more, as we post articles on this issue daily.

4. REPLACE with truly organic and natural products. You are looking for shorter ingredient lists of certified organic botanical ingredients and less harmful chemicals.  Use the Cosmetics Database to find safer solutions which ranks toxicity levels from 0-10; lowest to “highest toxic hazard.”

5. REDUCE the number of products you use, by looking at what you really need. Many products serve double duty.

6. STAY AWAY from the beauty aisles. Once you find products that you like and that fit your harmless, chemical-free criteria – resist the urge to purchase more.

7. ENJOY The new, healthier, cleaner you!

My family (including 3 teenagers) has been using Ava’s products for 10 months now & LOVE them all. As a nurse who has been teaching people about healthier living for the past 5 years, I could not find the products Ava offers under 1 roof. I was spending a lot of time researching products & buying products that I did not like. Now I leave all that up to Ava :) I feel absolutely confident that they are free of harmful chemicals. We need to start taking responsibility for our own health, including what we put on our skin & hair. Remember ~ your skin is the largest organ of your body! Thanks so much Ava :)

Wonderful Dawn! Great coming from an RN. Now…let’s get healthy products into these hospitals! My mother is also a nurse and it is truly astonishing the amount of toxic products used in hospitals…especially the cleaners.
We agree…it is up to all of us to take charge of our health and stop relying on untested products and ingredients to line our store shelves and own homes! As you are well aware, just because it is on a store shelf – doesn’t mean it’s safe.

Thank you for having Ava Anderson as a guest blogger. I found her site several months ago and was excited that she proved you don’t have to use all the chemical additives to have a quality and luxurious line. I was prepared to compromise somewhere to have non-toxic products and with the Ava Anderson line, there was no compromise. Many of the product are out performing what I used to use.

I discovered Ava Anderson products 2 years ago when I found out the “all natural” and “safe” products I was using on my children weren’t safe. I began researching for truly “safe” products and found Ava Anderson Non-Toxic. I loved the idea of sharing this information with others (especially mothers) and providing them a possible solution. I became a consultant in MO. Since then, I’ve become an advocate for Safer Chemicals. I recently went to D.C. to advocate to our senators for safer chemicals in everyday products.

Ava Anderson skin care has completely transformed my skin. I started to get adult acne breakouts when I turned 40. I had turned to getting professional facials, but the effects were only temporary. After I started using the Ava line, I honestly think my sking went through a ‘detox’ and my skin is now so clear that I hardly ever wear any foundation whatsoever. Thank for highlighting this issue. It should be discussed more often.

Thank you Ava for opening my eyes to an issue I had no idea about. I first discovered Ava Anderson Non Toxic while I was 5 months pregnant with my second child and was outraged that I had never been warned by my doctors that the products I was putting on my skin could be harming my unborn son. I tell everyone I meet now to check their ingredient labels and know what they are putting on their bodies and their children- it’s up to us because the government sure isn’t doing anything about it.

I have run a Naturopathic DOctor’s Office and medicinally (like a natural pharmacy of over 2,000 prescription quality tinctures and supplements that can be used to treat everything under the sun – successfully). It took me two YEARS to find a company that offered a personal care products line that WE could stand behind as an office.

While we found some good products, we never found a full line until we came across Ava, just after the company opened. Immediately, I started using and selling the skin care line.

Ava is such an incredible person and entrepreneur. As someone in the field of natural medicine, I commend this young woman. While I was spending years LOOKING for safe products to use, she was CREATING them in her teenage years. THANK YOU , AVA!

Thank you for creating the Ava Anderson Non-toxic line of personal, health and beauty products and home cleaning products! They are fabulous. I have been living “green” and using non toxic products for about 20 years. I went to non harmful products like baking soda, vinegar, essential oils etc. for home cleaning and botanicals and natural organic oils for body care and let me tell you, it is costly and not always easy to do and keep up! But with Ava products, it is now easy, convenient and affordable! Brilliant endevour to create A.A.N.T. I love to see young women who “get it” regarding healthy living and the impact it has, not only on our well being, but to the environment around us for future generations. We need to teach the young about these issues of toxic chemicals in our food and evironment. It cannot be ignored any longer. We do all we can (my daugther is a consultant now after trying some products and loving them!) to promote the Ava message, which is a message of health and hope for future generations. Thank you for offering such a great opportunity for young women to get involved and teach others to make right choices in health, beauty and home products. It is an awesome feeling to put Ava Anderson N.T. products into the hands of families and friends we know.
